What is Desktop as a Service (DaaS)?

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) is a cloud computing offering where a service provider, licensed with a per-user subscription, provides virtual desktops to end-users over the Internet. The provider takes care of the backend management for small businesses that find it too expensive or resource-consuming to create their virtual desktop infrastructure. Typically this management includes maintenance, backup, updates, and data storage. Cloud service providers may also handle security and desktop applications, or users may individually manage these aspects of service. There are two kinds of desktops are available in DaaS: Persistent and Non-persistent. Persistent desktop: Users can customize and save a desktop so every time a particular user logs in it will look the same way. Persistent desktops need more storage than non-persistent desktops, which can make them costlier. Non-persistent desktop: every time the user logs out, desktops are wiped out it’s just a way to access shared cloud services. How does DaaS work? The cloud service provider hosts infrastructure, network resources, and cloud storage with DaaS and streams a virtual desktop to the user’s device, where the user can access data and applications from the desktop via a web browser or other software. Organizations can buy as many virtual desktops as they need, through a model of subscription. Because desktop applications stream from a centralized server over the internet, graphic-intensive applications have historically been difficult to use with DaaS. This has changed with new technology, and even applications such as computer-aided design (CAD) that require a huge amount of computer power to display quickly can now run easily on DaaS. This technology can all benefit the engineering and design, broadcasting, and architectural industries. Advantages of Desktop as a Service: Faster deployment and decommissioning of active end-users Reduced downtime for IT support Cost savings Increased device flexibility Enhanced security Why Desktop as a Service? DaaS’s benefits include simplified management, greater flexibility, and lower ownership costs compared to traditional models. Businesses aiming to offer remote work options and flexibility of their devices can use DaaS to create a digital workspace quickly and easily. Because the data lives in a centralized, remote location, it can be constantly backed up without users having to manage backups on their own or worry about data that exists on the office computer but not at home.
