What is IT operations management?

Tue, 13 Apr 2021

Management of IT operations (ITOM) refers to the administration of all components of technology and application requirements within an organization. ITOM includes the provision of IT infrastructure, capacity management, cost-control activities, performance and security management, and IT infrastructure and asset availability management for all.

Under the framework, ITOM aims to monitor and control IT services and infrastructure, and perform the routine tasks needed to support the operation of applications, services, and hardware components.

What are the IT operations management functions?

As an enterprise organization expands its IT infrastructure and deployments of applications, IT operations managers assume responsibility for an increasing catalog of services. In the end, IT Ops is responsible for ensuring that all services and applications are stable and are available for business use. To achieve this, ITOM professionals perform managerial tasks in three key areas of service.

Managing Network Infrastructure:

The networking infrastructure includes all the necessary equipment to provide the enterprise with internal and external communication. Examples of tasks falling under this category are the setting up of remote access networks, managing the internal telephone system, regulating communication with external servers via firewalls, and maintaining network safety.

Computer Operations & Desk Help:

Management of IT operations includes managing help desk services, such as incident response, response to events, and fulfillment of requests. IT operations managers are also responsible for scheduling and managing data backups, communicating incident information and network outages to users, controlling the creation and provision of user-profiles and system access, and implementing an IT organization’s disaster recovery plan.

Server and Device Administration:

IT Operations teams also administer network endpoints such as servers and devices, in addition to administering network infrastructure within the IT organization. IT Ops plays a role in the daily management of the servers that host key business applications, including server maintenance, patching, and upgrading. Managers of IT Ops may be responsible for providing users with IT assets (desktops, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, etc.) and ensuring applications have access to the storage space they need to function properly.
